Huawei’s latest entry level smartphone, the Y5 Prime 2018, is now available on pre-order in Kenya for KSH 9,999. The phone is available exclusively through Jumia for that price. This is a competitive price and will surely eat into Tecno’s and Infinix’s pie. We do not see that many smartphones from Huawei within this price range and this will definitely be interesting to see how it performs. The launch of the Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 in Kenya follows the launch of yet another smartphone from the company, the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 not so long ago.

The Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 comes with a Full View Display (otherwise known as an 18:9 aspect ratio) and this will be one of its key selling points. This will be key especially if you consider the fact that the phone is retailing for Ksh 9,999. I am excited about this as we are seeing this latest trend trickle down to the entry level segment and this means that the consumers are the ones winning.

Huawei has been very quiet in this segment and to see them come back and embrace the latest trends in a good thing. Speaking about the pre-order Derek Duh, Country Director Huawei Mobile Kenya said, “ we are introducing Y5 Prime 2018  to meet the growing demand of customers who are looking for budget friendly device that provide the same function as any other phone that is a little bit pricy. The Pre-order phase is to introduce our consumers to the device which is currently available both Jumia and other retail stores across the market.”

You will be able to pre-order the phone from today to Thursday 12th of July on Jumia and in retail stores you will be able to do that until 15th July. Huawei says that those who pre-order the phone will get gift hampers in addition to the phone.

The Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 is clearly the company’s answer to the Tecno Spark 2 and the Infinix Hot 6 if you look at its specs. The company says that this phone is made for the youth who are looking for a chic big screen smartphone that comes with a bigger RAM. The company says the phone seeks to exceed users’ expectations to offer more value and create better user experiences. I will be reviewing this phone to determine if it does what the company says it does.

Below are some of the key specifications of the Huawei Y5 Prime 2018.
