It’s a new month and Google has just released the latest Android distribution numbers showing which Android versions are popular and which ones aren’t. These figures are important if you are a developer as they tell you which Android version to target when creating your apps.

The latest data was collected during a 7-day period ending on August 1. From the data, Android Lollipop is still the most popular version with a market share of 35.5%, a slight increase from last month when it had a market share of 35.1%. The rise can be attributed to some manufacturers releasing new devices running this OS.

Android Marshmallow also saw its market share rise even though by a smaller percentage. Right now, only 15.2% of all Android devices are running Marshmallow. This is a slight bump from last month when it had a market share of 13.3%. At least we are seeing this number rising even though it is at a slower pace.

Android distribution in August

Android KitKat is still around with a 29.2% market share, a drop from last month’s 30.1% market share. It is a good thing to see these old Android versions lose their market share as more and more people embrace Lollipop and Marshmallow. Android Jelly Bean currently has a market share of 16.7%, a drop from 17.8% last month.

Some of the other old Android iteration still being used include Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread and Froyo with 1.6%, 1.7% and 0.1% market share respectively. Those Android versions will less than 0.1% market share are not included in Google’s stats.
