Tanzanian Healthtech Startup Medikea Raises $1.2 Million Pre-Seed Funding

Medikea

Tanzanian e-health startup Medikea has raised US$1.2 million in pre-seed funding as it expands its clinic network to four facilities and targets 10 clinics by the end of 2027.

Medikea combines virtual consultations with physical clinics, pharmacies and diagnostic laboratories. The startup offers 24/7 online consultations alongside services in paediatrics, women’s health, dermatology, fertility and chronic disease management.

The funding was raised through successive rounds, with backing from Baobab Network, Catalyst Fund, develoPPP Ventures, Madica, Impacc, Hustle Fund, O’Shaughnessy Ventures, Madiro, the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and an angel investor.

Medikea operates its own facilities and employs a salaried clinical team. This allows patients to move between online consultations, physical examinations, diagnostic tests and prescriptions within one healthcare network.

“If you layer technology on top of a broken system, you are digitising inefficiency,” said Dr Elvis Silayo, Medikea’s co-founder and CEO.

The new funding will support expansion, product development and the introduction of additional specialist services. The startup aims to serve more than 100,000 patients over the next year.

Catalyst Fund partner Maxime Bayen said, “By combining clinics, diagnostics, pharmacy and virtual care, Elvis and the team are building a scalable model better equipped to serve communities facing growing climate-related health risks.”
