AMACO Energy Group, through its AMACO–HERCULES unit, has entered into a cooperation agreement with GE Vernova to explore the integration of gas turbine technology into its planned HERCULES power barge facility in Kenya.
The partnership is part of AMACO’s broader strategy to develop integrated energy infrastructure for industrial and digital applications, with a particular focus on the growing power requirements of data centres and AI infrastructure.
Under the agreement, HERCULES will integrate GE Vernova gas turbines into the planned power barge, with the potential for additional GE Vernova electrification and digital technologies to be incorporated as the platform develops.
The companies are positioning the initiative around a growing challenge for the digital economy: providing reliable, scalable power alongside rapidly expanding computing infrastructure.
“HERCULES comes with the power. We build the power together with the data centre. Power, cooling and AI compute must increasingly be developed as one coordinated infrastructure ecosystem,” said Dr. Theodore E. Theodoropoulos, Group CEO of AMACO Energy Group.
Mombasa data centre hub
AMACO is evaluating the Dongo Kundu and Kilindini/Mombasa ecosystems as potential locations for the HERCULES platform.
The company says the area combines access to the Port of Mombasa, industrial development, submarine fibre connectivity and the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone. This creates potential synergies between energy, industrial and digital infrastructure.
According to AMACO, the current industrial development pipeline could generate approximately 75MW of base-load demand, while future data centre developments could add another 75–100MW.
This could create a potential market of more than 175MW of electricity capacity across industrial and digital customers.
AMACO is consequently exploring potential long-term Power Purchase Agreements with industrial, technology and infrastructure stakeholders to support the proposed developments.
Power becomes central to AI infrastructure
The HERCULES concept is based on developing power generation, cooling and data centre infrastructure as an integrated system rather than as separate projects.
AMACO says the HERCULES model could eventually be deployed beyond Kenya, including in other markets across East Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Mediterranean.
The company is now undertaking technical, commercial, regulatory and financial preparations for the next phase of the project, including site assessments, grid integration, connectivity, financing and potential offtake agreements.
