KCB Bank has today added two new products designed to make Shariah-compliant banking more accessible in Kenya. These are the KCB Sahl Card and the KCB Sahl Agency Banking network.

The new solutions has been launched in partnership with Mastercard and is targeting customers who want financial products that comply with Islamic finance principles while still offering the convenience of modern banking.

Here is what you need to know.

What is KCB Sahl Banking?

KCB Sahl Banking is the Bank’s Islamic banking proposition. Islamic banking operates according to Shariah principles which prohibit the payment or receipt of interest (riba) and require financial transactions to be conducted ethically and transparently.

Islamic banks structure products in different ways to meet the Shariah guidelines and they don’t just adapt conventional products.

KCB says the new products were created after consulting with customers to understand their financial needs while ensuring that every solution remains compliant with Islamic finance principles.

What is the KCB Sahl Card?

The KCB Sahl Card is a Shariah-compliant payment card that enables customers to make everyday purchases, pay for goods and services and manage their spending without compromising their religious values.

It is developed together with Mastercard and combines Islamic banking principles with the convenience of digital payments.

Customers also get access Mastercard’s global lifestyle and travel benefits.

Key Features of the Sahl Card

Among the key benefits include:

What is KCB Sahl Agency Banking?

KCB has also introduced the Sahl Agency Banking network. This allows customers to access banking services through authorised KCB agents instead of visiting a physical branch.

Customers will be able to deposit money, withdraw cash, make payments and access essential banking services closer to where they live or work.

The move is expected to improve convenience, especially in areas where customers may not have easy access to a KCB branch.

During the launch, KCB officials noted that agency banking brings banking services closer to communities while also creating an additional income opportunity for agents operating the outlets.

Why Is This Important?

One of the recurring themes during the launch was financial inclusion. KCB says many Muslim customers have traditionally had fewer banking options that fully align with their religious beliefs. By introducing both a Shariah-compliant payment card and agency banking network, the bank hopes to remove some of those barriers.

Officials also noted that today’s customers expect the same convenience, digital experiences and accessibility available in conventional banking. The challenge has been delivering those experiences while remaining fully compliant with Islamic finance principles.

To achieve this, KCB said new products undergo review by Shariah scholars to ensure innovation does not compromise compliance.

Who Is the Sahl Card For?

The products are designed primarily for customers seeking Shariah-compliant financial services but KCB has noted that they are not limited exclusively to Muslim customers.
