Airtel Kenya has appointed Djibril Tobe as its new Managing Director. He is succeeding Ashish Malhotra, who is taking up a new role as Chief Executive Officer for Africa at Indus Towers.

Tobe brings more than two decades of experience across the telecommunications, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and consulting sectors, having worked in multiple African markets. Before his appointment, he was the Managing Director of Airtel Congo B.

Before that, he held several leadership positions within the Airtel Group, including Managing Director of Airtel Chad and Commercial Director at Airtel Burkina Faso. His career also includes leadership roles at Expresso Guinea, Ernst & Young and Coca-Cola.

“We welcome Djibril Tobe to his role and we are confident that his expertise will steer Airtel Kenya to the next level as we continue delivering innovative and relevant solutions. We would like to commend Ashish for his immense contribution to Airtel Kenya’s growth journey, and we wish him success in his new role,” the Board said in a statement.

Tobe takes over from Malhotra, who has led Airtel Kenya for the past four years. During his tenure, the company recorded significant growth, including the rollout of more than 2,000 network sites, the largest network expansion in Airtel Kenya’s history.

Under Malhotra’s leadership, Airtel Money increased its market share from 2% to 11%, while the company doubled its revenues and grew its subscriber base from 16 million to more than 24 million customers.

He also led the introduction of multiple customer-centric technologies and services, including 5G connectivity, eSIM technology, fiber internet solutions, Spam Alert services and the expansion of Airtel’s Home & Office Smart Connect broadband platform.

According to the Board, Tobe will build on the momentum established in recent years as Airtel Kenya continues to focus on growth, innovation, and customer-centric transformation.
