Kenya in Talks with Anthropic on AI Applications for Education, Health and Agriculture

Anthropic

Kenya is exploring potential collaboration with Anthropic to examine how frontier AI can be applied to address key national development priorities. These include education, healthcare, agriculture and language diversity.

The discussions were revealed by Ambassador Philip Thigo, Kenya’s Special Envoy on Technology, following a series of meetings with Elizabeth Kelly, Anthropic’s Head of Beneficial Deployments and members of her team.

“Discussions centered on identifying practical use cases of AI that could help solve real-world challenges facing Kenya, stressing the importance of responsible and locally relevant AI deployments,” said Thigo.

“I had a series of productive calls with Elizabeth Kelly, Head of Beneficial Deployments at Anthropic, and her team about areas for collaboration on practical AI use cases for Kenya,” Thigo said in a post shared on LinkedIn.

Among the areas discussed were AI applications for addressing linguistic diversity, strengthening pandemic preparedness, improving food systems and enhancing learner outcomes through AI-supported education pathways.

Thigo said he was impressed by Anthropic’s approach to bringing together subject matter experts across disciplines that align with Kenya’s development priorities. He described the discussions as focused on applying AI capabilities to tangible national challenges rather than theoretical possibilities but did not share any specifics.

While neither the Kenyan government nor Anthropic announced a formal partnership or specific projects, the discussions indicate growing engagement between Kenya and one of the world’s leading frontier AI companies.

Thigo said he looks forward to continued engagement with Anthropic as Kenya explores how frontier AI systems can be shaped and deployed to respond to the country’s priorities while supporting Africa’s broader development agenda.
