PawaPay Hits 3 Billion Mobile Money Transactions

Pawapay

PawaPay has announced it has surpassed three billion successful mobile money transactions. The company revealed that it processed its third billion transactions in under nine months, three months faster than it took to reach the previous billion. Over the same period, daily transaction volumes nearly doubled from around 2.4 million to five million.

The milestone comes amid strong growth in Africa’s mobile money ecosystem. According to the GSMA State of the Industry Report 2026, mobile money transaction value grew by 26% last year, while global merchant payments rose by 50% to reach $155 billion. PawaPay says its transaction growth has outpaced the broader market across several sectors it serves.

Mobile money is increasingly becoming a critical payment layer for a wide range of businesses, particularly smaller and mid-sized enterprises. PawaPay currently connects merchants to nearly 50 mobile money operators across 20 African markets through a single API. It offers access to more than one billion mobile wallets. The company also maintains direct regulatory licences in markets where required to help businesses easily navigate complex compliance environments. PawaPay has processed over €10 billion in payments to date.

Beyond connectivity, the platform provides end-to-end payment infrastructure. These include settlement, foreign exchange (FX), reconciliation and regulatory support. Since 2022, PawaPay has also incorporated stablecoins into its treasury operations, aiming to reduce settlement delays and improve predictability across currencies.

“Businesses expanding across Africa should not have to build a payments company inside their own organisation,” said Heiti Allak. “That is what happens when each new market adds operator relationships, settlement flows, support processes and treasury requirements. PawaPay takes that complexity away from the business, enabling them to focus on their customers and growth.”
