Safaricom is preparing to introduce Tap-to-Pay functionality for M-Pesa in Kenya, according to its CEO, Peter Ndegwa.

For higher-value payments, users will still be required to enter their M-Pesa PIN and this helps maintain the balance between convenience and security.

The introduction of Tap-to-Pay could reshape how everyday payments are made in Kenya by reducing friction at checkout, improving speed for small transactions and bringing M-Pesa closer to global contactless payment standards. It also aligns with Safaricom’s broader push to modernise its platform following a major infrastructure upgrade that has increased system capacity and reliability.
