Oracle is set to launch its first public cloud region in Kenya. The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) region will be hosted at iXAfrica Data Centre in Nairobi, making it the first in East Africa to offer Oracle’s full public cloud services locally.
A local OCI region means Kenyan companies, startups, and government institutions will be able to run cloud workloads inside the country instead of relying on servers in Europe or South Africa. That translates into:
- Lower latency for applications and digital services
- Better data sovereignty and compliance
- Faster deployment of AI, fintech, and enterprise systems
- Reduced cloud costs tied to international data transfer
In practical terms, banks, telcos, e-commerce firms, health platforms, and AI startups can now build and scale on Oracle’s cloud without pushing sensitive data outside Kenya.
Why iXAfrica was chosen
Oracle selected iXAfrica as its host partner because it is currently the most “execution-ready” hyperscale facility in the country. The Nairobi-based data centre is designed to meet global cloud standards and is already built to handle high-density AI workloads, carrier-neutral connectivity, redundant power and cooling systems and direct access to submarine cable and national fiber networks
iXAfrica’s campus has a capacity of 22MW, with the ability to support AI racks drawing up to 50kW each. This is a key requirement for modern machine learning and cloud compute infrastructure.
Oracle already operates cloud regions in South Africa and other parts of the world. Kenya now joins that global network, giving local businesses direct access to OCI services such as compute, storage, databases, analytics, and AI tools.
Construction and infrastructure deployment at iXAfrica is already in advanced stages.
Once active, the Nairobi region is expected to serve not just Kenya, but also neighboring markets across East and Central Africa.
