The Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET), in partnership with Huawei Technologies Kenya, today announced the successful completion of the second phase of the national Huawei Train the Trainer program which is an initiative aimed at strengthening digital skills and ICT training capacity across Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
The ceremony was officiated by Dr. Joseph Kanyi, Director TVET, who represented the Principal Secretary, State Department for TVET. A total of 65 TVET lecturers completed the intensive 15-day program covering advanced on Artificial Intelligence, and Data Communication, Cloud and Cybersecurity equipping trainers with both foundational and advanced competencies in network fundamentals, IP routing and switching, WLAN technologies, network security, and data communication principles aligned to enterprise network environments.
The AI modules introduced them to artificial intelligence fundamentals, machine learning workflows, deep learning concepts, dataset processing, model training, and application scenarios for AI in real-world industry contexts. Huawei awarded all trainers certification exam vouchers, ensuring they can sit for global certification exams and advance to industry-recognized qualification status.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Kanyi underscored the alignment of the program with the government’s Dual TVET model and encouraged trainers to cascade the skills gained to their institutions and communities.
“This program is not just about equipping trainers with ICT skills. It is about preparing Kenya’s workforce for a rapidly changing digital future. The knowledge gained here will directly impact students, institutions, and national competitiveness,” said Dr. Kanyi.
The State Department for TVET and Huawei have collaborated since 2021, resulting in the establishment of 11 Huawei ICT Academies across Kenya. In May 2024, the Kenya School of TVET was officially recognized in China as the designated Academy Support Centre, responsible for empowering TVET ICT academies nationwide.
Under the latest phase of the program:
- 7 trainers will be deployed to the Academy Support Centre, 55 trainers will operationalize Huawei ICT Academies in their respective institutions
- In May 2025, the partnership was further strengthened through an MoU enabling expansion to 150 TVET institutions and targeting 10,000 beneficiaries over the next three years.
Representing Huawei Technologies Kenya, Yuta Leng, Public Affairs Director praised the collaboration and reaffirmed Huawei’s investment in Kenya’s talent pipeline:
“Huawei is honoured to support the State Department for TVET in empowering lecturers with globally competitive skills. Kenya is a rising technology hub in Africa, and we remain committed to expanding opportunities for both trainers and students,” said Yuta.
He noted that the Huawei ICT Competition continues to provide global exposure for Kenyan students and urged more institutions to participate.
The Kenya School of TVET acknowledged the impact of the program, emphasizing its role in strengthening institutional capacity for high-quality ICT training. “This initiative significantly enhances our ability to deliver cutting-edge training aligned to global industry standards. The trainers graduating today will be central to driving digital transformation within TVET institutions,” KSTVET noted in its statement.
The State Department directed trainers to: Cascade the training to students and communities, Ensure proper management and coordination of the ICT Academies, Maintain accurate trainee data and certification records and Provide regular progress and impact reports
Dr. Kanyi reaffirmed the government’s intention to deepen the partnership saying, “We appreciate Huawei’s continued investment in Kenya’s ICT talent ecosystem. We look forward to signing a new MoU to further streamline and expand our ICT talent development initiatives.”
