Vertiv has been selected to provide next-generation infrastructure for ROM1, Digital Realty’s first data centre in Italy. The company will supply advanced cooling and power systems designed for high-performance computing environments. ROM1 is planned to have a capacity above 3 MW.
This new agreement strengthens the existing collaboration between Vertiv and Digital Realty across several European markets. The two companies already work together in Paris, Madrid and Amsterdam, where Vertiv supports Digital Realty with critical infrastructure technologies.
The ROM1 facility will introduce cooling systems that take advantage of Rome’s climate to improve efficiency through free cooling. The centre will also include power systems that support high-density workloads in AI and machine learning environments.
Construction will take place in phases and operations are expected to begin in 2027. ROM1 will operate as a carrier-neutral facility with direct links to major Mediterranean cities through fibre routes and submarine cable systems. Digital Realty also plans to extend connectivity to Barcelona in early 2026. The new facility will complement the company’s existing presence in Marseille, Athens and Crete.
According to Alessandro Talotta, managing director for Italy at Digital Realty, Rome is becoming a key link between Europe and the Mediterranean. He said the technology choices for ROM1 will help position the facility as a strategic AI hub and set new standards for efficiency and performance.
Karsten Winther, president for EMEA at Vertiv, noted that the rapid adoption of AI is increasing demand for more sophisticated data centre systems. He said Vertiv’s solutions are built for high-intensity workloads and are designed to scale while supporting customers’ efficiency goals.
ROM1 will introduce adaptive cooling systems that adjust to real-time workload requirements and a high-efficiency power distribution setup for intensive computing. Smart environmental controls and support for alternative energy sources are also part of the design.
