Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI have announced a $38 billion multi-year partnership that will see OpenAI run its advanced artificial intelligence workloads on Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.
AWS will thus provide OpenAI with access to Amazon EC2 UltraServers. These feature hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs and interestingly not AWS Trainium. These systems can scale to tens of millions of CPUs. This allows OpenAI to handle its expanding generative AI workloads efficiently and securely. The rollout of this infrastructure begins immediately and full capacity is expected by the end of 2026 and further expansion into 2027.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable computing resources. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone,” he said.
Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, added that AWS infrastructure will serve as the backbone for OpenAI’s ambitions. “The breadth and immediate availability of optimized compute demonstrates why AWS is uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s vast AI workloads,” he said.
The partnership represents one of the largest cloud infrastructure deals in recent years and signals a shift in how OpenAI manages its computing needs. The company has long relied on Microsoft Azure as its primary cloud provider and this new collaboration shows OpenAI’s intent to diversify its compute partnerships.
The infrastructure being built for OpenAI is designed to support many use cases. These range from model training to serving inference for ChatGPT and future AI systems. AWS aims to deliver high performance and low latency for OpenAI’s demanding workloads by clustering GPUs and CPUs within Amazon EC2 UltraServers.
Earlier this year, OpenAI models became available on Amazon Bedrock, allowing AWS customers to access OpenAI’s foundation models for tasks such as coding, analysis and workflow automation. This new agreement expands on that collaboration, making AWS a critical player in the next phase of OpenAI’s growth.
