What You Need to Know About Safaricom’s New VybCall Feature

Safaricom has partnered with Huawei, has unveiled VybCall, Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service. This is a new spin to the Skiza experience we are used to.

VybCall is replacing the traditional ringback tone or audio tune with short-form video clips. Instead of hearing a song while waiting for someone to pick up, callers will now see curated videos. Safaricom says this offers a more immersive and personalised experience.

A First in Africa

Kenya is the first country in Africa to roll out a Video Ring Back Tone service and the 3rd in the world to do so.

“At Safaricom, we are constantly exploring new ways to give our customers choice and control through targeted experiences. The launch of Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone service is one way we are transforming daily moments creatively, buttressing our commitment to innovation,” said James Maitai, Safaricom’s Chief Technology and Information Officer.

VybCall is currently available on the following devices:

The feature Will be supported on vivo devices in Q2 2026. This feature requires devices that support 4G, 5G and VoLTE.

Beyond entertainment, VybCall opens new possibilities for content creators and brands. The service includes monetisation capabilities that will allow creators to upload and earn from their videos the same way musicians benefit from Skiza tunes. Businesses can also use this feature to promote their brands.

Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao said, “VybCall will help the amazing creatives in Kenya. This is one of the many ways Huawei works with partners to develop innovative technologies that improve customer experience and drive economic growth.”

From Skiza to VybCall

Safaricom’s Skiza Tunes was launched  almost 20 years ago giving Kenyans a chance to  personalize their calls.  VybCall is its natural evolution especially now that short-form videos are dominating digital culture through platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels.
