Absa Bank Kenya has appointed Mr. Mohammed Nyaoga, EBS, SC, as the Chairman of its Board of Directors, effective 1 October 2025. He takes over from Mr. Charles Muchene, whose nine-year tenure on the board, including as Chairman, concludes on 30 September 2025.

Mr. Nyaoga brings over four decades of experience in legal practice, corporate governance and financial sector leadership to the role. He has previously chaired the Central Bank of Kenya, EcoBank Kenya, and served on the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) External Experts Panel in Washington. He currently chairs the African Development Bank Group’s Disclosure and Access to Information Appeals Panel.

“I am honoured to assume the role of Chairman of the Board of Absa Bank Kenya PLC,” Mr. Nyaoga said in a statement. “The financial landscape continues to evolve, and I look forward to working with fellow Board members and the Management team to advance our strategic priorities and deliver sustainable value to our customers, colleagues, shareholders, and the communities we serve.”

Absa Kenya acknowledged the contributions of outgoing Chairman Mr. Muchene, who has overseen the bank through major transitions, including its rebrand from Barclays to Absa and its subsequent market repositioning.

“It has been a privilege for me to lead the Bank through a period of change, growth, and resilience,” said Mr. Muchene. “I am confident that the Bank is strategically placed to continue its growth trajectory into the future.”
