iColo has announced the entry of the Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP) into its Mombasa Two (MBA2) facility located in Nyali. This facility was opened back in 2022 and is the second one operated by iColo in the coastal city. This move by KIXP is expected to help improve internet performance and strengthen the regions digital ecosystem.

KIXP is operated by the Technology Service Providers of Kenya (TESPOK). It allows networks to exchange internet traffic locally rather than relying on international routes. Its expansion into MBA2 will reduce latency, improve redundancy and bring interconnection points closer to users along Kenya’s coast.

“We are elated to see KIXP’s consistent growth in our campuses over the years, and having them deploy at MBA2 is yet another milestone we celebrate,” said Rina Sodha, Director – Customer Implementation at iColo. “Over 100 networks are already connected at our Mombasa Campus, and we anticipate that the exchange’s new Point of Presence will foster an immense shift in the internet experience, not only in Kenya but also in the East African region.”

TESPOK CEO Fiona Asonga emphasized the importance of the new presence in Mombasa: “Our presence at iColo MBA2 reflects our commitment to ensuring that KIXP remains accessible to networks across Kenya and beyond. This expansion enhances Mombasa’s role as a key landing point for multiple subsea cables and positions it as a vital hub for regional and international internet traffic exchange.”

Mombasa is already one of Africa’s most strategic digital hubs. It is supported by seven subsea cable systems, including 2Africa. By hosting KIXP, iColo strengthens its position as the most interconnected gateway into East Africa.
