Co-operative Bank of Kenya has announced the transition to the updated ISO/IEC 27001:2022 standard. The bank received the certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI). Co-operative Bank was the first bank in East Africa to achieve ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification in 2014.

The ISO/IEC 27001 standard is recognised as the most trusted framework for information security management systems (ISMS). The 2022 update added a more comprehensive approach to managing modern cyber risks, addressing issues such as cloud-based operations, digital transformation and increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

According to Co-operative Bank’s Director of ICT & Innovations, Charles Washika, the certification demonstrates the bank’s long-term investment in protecting customer information through advanced security protocols. “This milestone has enhanced our risk management, standardised information security policies organisation-wide, and strengthened our incident response capabilities,” he said during the handover ceremony.

The audit covered critical security areas, including physical security measures, access control systems, risk management protocols, change management processes, business continuity planning, and secure software development practices. Meeting these standards assures customers, regulators, and partners that the bank has implemented globally recognised security protocols.

BSI’s IMETA Sales and Commercial Director, Ilias Karampoikis, noted that the certification reflects Co-operative Bank’s readiness to address evolving digital risks. “Certification to the information security management systems standard shows that Co-op Bank has taken the necessary steps to protect itself against cyber threats and ensure its information security is in line with global best practice,” he said.
