Safaricom has been named the winner of the Best Use of Digital Technology category at the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) Africa Excellence in Procurement and Supply Awards 2025. The award recognises organisations that use innovative digital tools to improve procurement operations, decision-making and efficiency.

Safaricom earned the accolade for its Artificial Intelligence-powered Supply Market Analysis initiative. This solution delivers real-time insights into market definitions, supplier landscapes, cost structures, competition, trends, and commodity risks. According to Safaricom, the technology has reduced market analysis time from nearly a month to just 10 minutes, while at the same time accelerating tender cycles and improving cost transparency.

“This award brings us closer to our vision of becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030. By using AI to improve how we work, we are making our operations faster, smarter, and more innovative,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.

The recognition places Safaricom alongside other 2025 finalists, including Rohloff Group for its Energy Management initiative and World Vision East African Region for its Contract Life Cycle Management (CLM) project.

Procurement is often a hidden but critical driver of organisational efficiency and competitiveness. Africa faces supply chain challenges from logistics bottlenecks to currency volatility and these can significantly affect business operations. Having access to real-time market intelligence can give companies an edge over their competitors.
