Absa and Visa have partnered to accelerate access to secure and inclusive digital payment infrastructure in Africa. Through this partnership, both institutions will be able to scale solutions for small businesses, digital innovation, and financial inclusion.
Absa has previously introduced a number of Visa-powered products in the continent, including Visa Direct (for card-to-card payments) and metal premium cards under Visa Signature and Infinite. In markets like Mauritius, the launch of Absa Pay issuer wallets marked the beginning of contactless and mobile-first banking experiences.
“We’re investing in local-first solutions that reflect the realities of African consumers and entrepreneurs,” said Saviour Chibiya, Chief Executive of Absa Regional Operations.
This partnership seeks to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This will be done through tools to help manage expenses, issue virtual business cards, and improve access to working capital.
Absa recently introduced Visa Business Credit Cards to help businesses track their cash flow as we told you a few weeks back. These cards offer access to Visa Spend Clarity Plus, marking the first time this expense management solution has been introduced in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Visa representatives said the collaboration reflects their shared goal of expanding financial access and driving innovation at scale. “We’re proud to help power Absa’s regional momentum with Visa’s global network and technology,” said Michael Berner, Visa’s Head for Southern and East Africa.
The focus going forward will be on building out digital payment infrastructure, supporting underserved communities, and improving customer experiences through locally relevant solutions.
For both companies, the renewed agreement strengthens their role in shaping Africa’s evolving digital financial landscape, particularly at a time when mobile-first services and alternative credit models are redefining how people bank and do business.
