Safaricom has officially launched a new campaign called Maisha Poa Ni Digital. If you’re still using a feature phone or know someone who is, this is something worth paying attention to. The campaign is all about accelerating digital inclusion in Kenya by helping more people, especially those in rural and peri-urban areas, transition from 2G phones to affordable 4G+ smartphones.

What exactly is this campaign about, who is it targeting and how can you benefit? Here is everything you need to know.

What Is Maisha Poa Ni Digital?

Launched in May 2025, the Maisha Poa Ni Digital campaign is Safaricom’s latest move to push digital access across Kenya. The idea is simple, make it easier and more affordable for Kenyans to own a smartphone and access the internet.

Through the campaign, Safaricom is offering entry-level 4G+ smartphones bundled with 5.5GB of free data. To make the devices even more accessible, they’re available on the popular Lipa Mdogo Mdogo payment plan.

    Affordable Smartphones and Flexible Payment

This is what makes this campaign different:

    • Low Entry Cost – You can get started with a deposit of just Ksh 500.
    • Daily Instalments – Pay as little as Ksh 30 per day for your new 4G+ smartphone.
    • Free Data – Each phone comes with a 5.5GB data bundle.

This is great for those who do not have the full amount to pay upfront but still want a smartphone with internet access.

    Why This Matters

Smartphones have become important for learning, work, financial transactions, health services and more. But a big percentage of Kenya’s population, especially in rural areas, still uses 2G feature phones. This greatly limits what they can do online.

Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom PLC, said:

“A smartphone is a gateway to jobs, financial inclusion, and empowerment. Our goal with this campaign is to bridge the digital divide by providing affordable smartphones and flexible payment plans.”

This campaign is not just about selling devices, it ensures that every Kenyan has a fair shot at taking part in the digital economy.

Safaricom says it now has 4G coverage for over 97% of Kenya’s population. This means most people can immediately benefit from better speeds and access once they get a compatible device. Whether you’re in Kisumu, Eldoret, Machakos, or a smaller town, chances are you’re covered.

What You Can Do With a 4G+ Smartphone

If you are coming from a 2G feature phone, this is what a smartphone offers:

    • Use M-PESA efficiently using the app or USSD services.
    • Access government services on platforms like eCitizen.
    • Watch educational videos and join online learning.
    • Download health and wellness apps.
    • Stay connected via WhatsApp, Facebook, or email.

    How to Get Started

If you’re interested, here’s how you can take part:

    1. Visit any Safaricom Shop, authorized dealer, or Lipa Mdogo Mdogo agent
    2. Dial *544*5# on your phone to check if you’re eligible for the offer.
