The Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) is set for a major transformation by the government. The government wants to reposition the state agency to help it keep up with the digital age. With the rise of e-commerce and digital logistics, the government hopes to turn Posta into a key player in this sector.
Speaking during a meeting with PCK officials, State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke said that modernizing PCK is part of the government’s broader effort to align State Agencies and Government Authorities (SAGAs) with current technological trends.
“Posta holds immense potential for growth, especially by leveraging digital platforms to support e-commerce and logistics,” noted PS Isaboke.
At the heart of the transformation is a strategy that includes upgrading ICT and logistics infrastructure, attracting strategic partners, and modernizing postal outlets. The aim is to repurpose the postal outlets into e-commerce fulfillment centers. Since there are such outlets in almost all corners of the country, the transformation can only fail if the decision makers allow it to.
As Kenya’s digital economy expands rapidly, the move will help breathe new life into Posta. It will enable it to compete with private logistics firms and offer more efficient services to consumers and small businesses across the country. Some stakeholders have been calling for this transformation for years and it is good to finally see the government catch up.
The meeting was also attended by Postmaster General John Tonui, SDBT Secretary Administration Waweru Kimani. Present were other senior officials from both PCK and the Ministry.
If successful, this transformation could mark a turning point for the Posta Corporation, making it a critical enabler of digital commerce in Kenya.
