Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the availability of AWS Wavelength in Senegal in partnership with Sonatel, an affiliate of Orange. This is the first Wavelength Zone in Sub-Saharan Africa and the second Wavelength Zone in Africa. The first AWS Wavelength Zone in Africa was launched in Morocco in February this year.

AWS Wavelength enables developers to build applications that require edge computing infrastructure to deliver low latency to mobile devices and end users or increase the resiliency of their existing edge applications. Wavelength deploys standard AWS compute and storage services to the edge of communications service providers’ (CSP) networks.

“Today, we are announcing the general availability of AWS Wavelength in partnership with Sonatel, an affiliate of Orange, in Dakar, Senegal,” said AWS in a statement. “With this first Wavelength Zone in Sub-Saharan Africa, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), enterprises, and developers can now use AWS infrastructure and services to support applications with data residency, low latency, and resiliency requirements.”

The AWS Wavelength delivers on-demand AWS compute and storage services to customers in West Africa. AWS Wavelength enables customers to build and deploy applications that meet their data residency, low-latency, and resiliency requirements. AWS Wavelength offers the operational consistency, industry leading cloud security practices, and familiar tools for automation that are similar to an AWS Region. With AWS Wavelength in partnership with Sonatel, developers can now build the applications needed for use cases, such as AI/ML inference at the edge, gaming, and fraud detection.
