Agriculture plays a key role in Kenya’s economy employing millions and contributes significantly to the country’s GDP. Even with that, small-scale farmers often face many challenges including access to financing, expert advice and market insights.

With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), technology will play a crucial role transforming existing farming practices. Safaricom, through its DigiFarm initiative, uses AI to provide farmers with key insights, financial access and precision farming solutions.

At the recent #SafaricomDecode event a few weeks back, Seema Gohil, Director of DigiFarm, shared how AI has a crucial role in shaping the future of agriculture in Kenya.

    AI-Powered Credit Risk Analysis

Access to financing is one of the biggest challenges most small-scale farmers in Kenya face. Traditional financial institutions cannot easily assess the creditworthiness of farmers as they lack formal financial records. Safaricom’s DigiFarm uses AI-driven credit risk analysis to determine creditworthiness.

AI models are able to determine the risk levels of farmers by analyzing their transaction history, mobile money usage and farming pattern. This them helps calculate their credit score. This will make it easier for financial institutions to offer the farmers tailored loan products. This unlocks funding for farmers who can use it to invest in better seeds, equipment, and irrigation systems

    AI-Driven Farmer Advisory Services

Farming decisions should be data-driven, but many smallholder farmers rely on traditional knowledge and unpredictable weather patterns. DigiFarm integrates AI-powered advisory services to offer personalized and region-specific guidance to farmers.

Using real-time data from weather forecasts, soil sensors and satellite imagery, the system provides farmers with recommendations on:

    • Best planting and harvesting times
    • Soil health management
    • Pest and disease control methods
    • Market demand and pricing trends

By getting timely and accurate guidance, farmers are able to optimize their yields, reduce losses and maximize their earnings.

    AI Chatbots for Precision Farming

AI-powered chatbots are becoming a game-changer for precision farming. Safaricom has included AI chatbots into DigiFarm to offer hyper-localized, real-time insights to farmers via their mobile devices. These chatbots enable farmers to:

    • Ask questions about farming best practices in their local dialect.
    • Receive instant responses on weather conditions and soil health.
    • Get alerts on pest outbreaks and mitigation strategies.

Since majority of the smallholder farmers in Kenya own mobile phones, AI chatbots make vital agricultural knowledge more accessible.

The Impact of AI on Small-Scale Farmers

Safaricom’s AI-driven solutions are making access to agricultural knowledge and resources for Kenyan farmers easier. Key benefits include:

    • Increased financial inclusion through AI-powered credit assessments
    • Higher yields and better quality produce due to data-driven farming decisions
    • Improved market linkages with AI-driven price forecasts and supply chain optimization

The Future of AI in Kenyan Agriculture

AI is set to play an even bigger role in Kenya’s agricultural sector. Some of the benefits include:

    • Automated AI-driven irrigation and farming systems
    • Blockchain-powered traceability for produce supply chains
    • AI-powered marketplaces connecting farmers directly to consumers

Even though challenges such as digital literacy and infrastructure gaps still exist, initiatives like DigiFarm are a good start as we move towards a tech-driven agricultural sector.
