The National Construction Authority, (NCA) is set to construct its flagship project, the Centre for Construction Industry Development (CCID) in Konza Technopolis. The CCID project, a subsidiary of NCA, focusing on enhancing the construction industry through capacity building, innovation, research and support services, will be constructed on a 6.4 acres parcel of land.

“CCID being located at Konza Technopolis, Africa’s Silicon Savannah, is not only strategic but will be an integral partner in the development within the Technopolis and provide the much-needed platform for research on alternative building materials and technologies, as well as training and capacity building to provide the skills and innovative technologies,” Alice Wahome, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development said.

Ms. Wahome, who presided over the hand over of the parcel of land at Konza indicated that the CCID project will act as a centre for up-skilling and research in the construction industry within the country and outside the country.

“The CCID must be a model structure and must be built in full compliance with The National Building Regulations 2024, also referred to as The Building Code,” she said.

A 2020 2020 commissioned by NCA, in partnership with Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), and African Development Bank (AfDB) on Assessment of the Domestic Capacity of the Construction Industry and the Development of a National Construction Capacity Strategy established that local contractors face numerous difficulties such as skilled labour, alternative building materials and systems, access to affordable financing, appropriate plant and equipment, current technologies and access to markets.

“The CCID is envisioned as a national centre of excellence in the construction industry whose objectives is to establish a conducive environment to support interdisciplinary basic and applied construction-related research; provide a hub for knowledge, technology transfer and research diffusion to the construction industry and other allied sectors; develop a centre of excellence for specialized training programmes (up-skilling) and incubation services for construction-related start-ups and MSMEs; and identify and consolidate best practices, critical success factors and appropriate benchmarks,” Mercy Okiro, NCA Board Chairperson.

“Konza Technopolis has now entered the vertical infrastructure phase and we expect to see more of our onboarded investors such as NCA breaking ground this year,” Prof. Raphael Munavu, KoTDA Board chairman said.
