Kenyan communications firm Aquila East Africa has officially expanded operations into Rwanda and Uganda, marking a significant step for East African SMEs in the regional market. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, SMEs contribute over 30% of Kenya’s GDP and employ more than 80% of the workforce, underscoring the economic potential of local businesses. Aquila’s regional expansion aligns with its 2023-2026 strategic plan, which focuses on promoting economic development and strengthening market linkages across East Africa.

Kester Muhanji, Aquila’s Managing Director, emphasized the importance of this expansion: “As a Kenyan-based firm, we are proud to bring our services to new markets, strengthening the role of homegrown businesses in driving regional economic progress. With our entry into Uganda and Rwanda, we hope to foster a self-sustaining ecosystem for specialized services crucial to business resilience and growth.”

To oversee this ambitious expansion, Aquila has appointed Bonny L’souza as Board Chair and Anne Ngatia as a board member, each bringing extensive expertise in business strategy, marketing and operations.

Their over 30-years collective experience will provide Aquila with invaluable insights and access to industry networks as it builds its presence in Rwanda and Uganda.

“We welcome this distinguished group of advisors to our team,” said Kester Muhanji, Managing Director at Aquila East Africa. “Their strategic leadership will be invaluable as we strive to deliver high-impact solutions that meet regional demands”.

Aquilas expansion into Rwanda and Uganda reflects growth and sends a strong message about the capabilities of Kenyan firms to not only serve local markets but also establish a regional footprint, underlining the rise of SMEs as a cornerstone of Africa’s economic growth.
