Airtel Africa plc has announced the retirement of its Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun “Segun” Ogunsanya, effective from 1 July 2024. This move follows a tenure of over 12 years, during which Mr. Ogunsanya played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s growth and expanding its footprint across the continent.

Mr. Ogunsanya, who initially joined Airtel in 2012, served as the head of the Nigeria Operations for nine years before ascending to the position of Chief Executive Officer for the entire Airtel Africa Group in 2021.

Airtel Africa plc has also unveiled Sunil Taldar as the incoming Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, set to succeed Mr. Ogunsanya. Mr. Taldar, who joined Airtel Africa in October 2023 as Director of Transformation, will work alongside Mr. Ogunsanya during a transition period before officially assuming the CEO role on 1 July 2024. This orderly leadership transition is expected to ensure the seamless continuation of Airtel Africa’s strategic objectives.

One of the key highlights of Mr. Ogunsanya’s tenure was the launch of Airtel Africa’s first Sustainability Strategy, showcasing the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and corporate social responsibility. Building on this legacy, he will transition into a new role as the inaugural Chair of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation, a separate legal entity independent of the Airtel Africa Group.

The Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation, under Mr. Ogunsanya’s guidance, aims to accelerate the company’s sustainability initiatives and charitable operations across its locations in Africa. The foundation’s focus will include promoting digital inclusion, financial inclusion, access to education, and environmental protection, aligning with broader developmental goals for the continent.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Airtel Africa plc, expressed gratitude to Mr. Ogunsanya for his significant contributions to the company, both as Chief Executive and earlier as Managing Director and CEO of Nigeria, the largest market for Airtel Africa. Mr. Mittal also welcomed Mr. Taldar, praising his industry experience, strategic vision, customer focus, and track record of delivery.

In his statement, Mr. Ogunsanya expressed pride in the accomplishments achieved during his tenure and his dedication to transforming lives across Africa. He highlighted the importance of handing over to a new leader who can build on Airtel Africa’s strengths and capitalize on the opportunities that lie ahead.
