    Amazon Opens AWS Development Centre in Nairobi

    Earlier today, the first Amazon Web Services (AWS) Development Centre in Kenya was opened in Nairobi. The event was, graced by President William Ruto, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and prominent figures from the ICT industry.

    Following Amazon’s 2022 declaration to establish a data hosting market in the country, this state-of-the-art facility will serve as a focal point for infrastructure deployment. Here, cutting-edge services including computing, storage, and databases will converge, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and progress. Nairobi’s AWS centre now stands proudly alongside 16 similar establishments in the United States, and he second on the continent after South Africa.

    During the launch, President Ruto expressed his commitment to facilitating the entry of businesses into Kenya, a promise he had made to Kenyans. He said. “As we fulfill our responsibilities as a government, we expect our partners like AWS to fulfill theirs. I am pleased to see them honoring their commitment.”

    Ruto commended AWS for providing a platform for Kenyans to harness their skills and talents, opening up a world of opportunities. “Congratulations to AWS for empowering Kenyans to explore their abilities. We stand on the brink of an exciting future working alongside Amazon,” he said.

    The president also emphasized the pivotal role of education and technology in the country’s progress. “This year, we are allocating the largest budget to education to ensure a strong foundation for our future,” he stated. He welcomed AWS’s presence in Nairobi and extended his support to further collaborative initiatives. “Your presence here marks a new chapter for Kenya. Just guide us on the path you envision, and I assure you, we will walk it together,” the President added.
