Huawei Kenya has announced a strategic partnership with the Esports Federation of Kenya, providing the Kenyan National esports team with cutting-edge 5G technology. This collaboration comes just in time for the Global Esports Games African qualification matches, where Kenya is vying for a spot in the prestigious Africa team.
Huawei’s 5G routers promise seamless connectivity, offering a high-speed, low-latency network essential for the precision and split-second decision-making demanded by competitive gaming. Maureen Mwaniki, Public Relations Director at Huawei Kenya, highlighted the importance of this partnership. “We believe in the power of technology to elevate gaming experiences, and this partnership exemplifies our commitment to enhancing the esports ecosystem in the country,” she said.
The esports battlegrounds are set across two major categories. In the eFootball category, Kenya finds itself in Group B alongside South Sudan, Senegal, Djibouti, Somalia, and Algeria. The top two from each group secure automatic qualification. Harry “Kappa” Thuku is one of the players who will be representing Kenya in this category.
Huawei’s 5G prowess extends to the mobile gaming arena, particularly in the popular PUBG Mobile game. Kenya’s PUBG Mobile team, under the expert coaching of Allan “Serge” Kimani, faces fierce competition from nine other African nations. The battle royal format, involving all teams competing simultaneously in a 4v4 game, promises intense action and thrilling gameplay.
Kenya’s women’s team, known as dota2, has already qualified for the global showdown after emerging as the top contenders in their African qualifiers. The team’s success serves as a testament to the growing prominence of women in esports.
Some of the popular esport games in Kenya include FIFA, Fortnite, and League of Legends. Esports, whether played on consoles or online platforms, has become a focal point of competitive spirit and camaraderie, offering substantial prize money and global recognition.
Ronny Lusigi, the newly elected Esports Federation President, expressed unwavering confidence in the Kenyan team’s abilities. “We have a strong team. Our gamers have the talent, and I am confident our players will prevail. They have received the necessary support in terms of proper location for 5G internet connectivity and any other necessary equipment,” he stated.
