In a significant development for the internet service provider (ISP) industry in Kenya, Mawingu has recently received KSh 1.12 Billion in funding, propelling its expansion plans. With a goal to provide affordable and reliable internet connectivity to underserved regions, Mawingu has initiated its network expansion drive, aiming to connect an additional 25 counties across the country. Following the successful closure of its Series B investment in February 2023, Mawingu secured a substantial amount of KSh 1.12 Billion in funding. This investment included participation from InfraCo Africa, E3 Capital, and FMO. The infusion of capital has allowed Mawingu to accelerate its mid-term growth strategy, expanding its network coverage to 25 additional counties within Kenya this year. Mawingu is dedicated to providing reliable and affordable internet connectivity to rural and underserved areas.
Since February 2023, Mawingu has already connected an additional 2,000 households and businesses in seven counties, namely Kilifi, Kwale, Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisii, and Migori. In total, Mawingu has connected 22 counties and serves over 9,500 homes and businesses, making it the country’s largest ISP catering to rural Kenya.
One of the most significant advantages for Mawingu customers is the accessibility of unlimited meaningful internet for only KSh 2,500 per month. This pricing model stands in stark contrast to conventional 4G networks, where the same data consumption could cost customers between KSh 20,000 to KSh 30,000 monthly for a 240GB data bundle. Mawingu’s commitment to affordability ensures that more Kenyans can access the internet and explore new opportunities for work, education, entertainment, and social connections.
With its ongoing expansion plans and commitment to connecting underserved regions, Mawingu aims to reach an impressive target of connecting 250,000 Kenyans within the next five years.
