Earlier today, a new e-commerce platform officially launched its operations in Kenya. This new platform is called Kapu and was started by former Jumia executives including Sam Chappatte who at one point was Jumia CEO. He left Jumia back in November 2021 and is now the CEO of Kapu.

Some of the other former Jumia executives joining him include:

    •  Cyrus Onyiego former MD of Jumia Travel and former COO of Jumia Foos– he will be the COO at Kapu.
    • Former Jumia CMO who will now be the Head of Marketing at Kapu.
    • Stanislas Barth who was Jumia’s head of Offline Sales – he will be Head of Supply at Kapu.

This team looks strong and has good experience with the e-commerce sector in Kenya. Kapu is hopeful that it can have a positive impact in Kenya thanks to the experience of its team and its overall strategy.

    Not Just a Jumia competitor

I think the most important thing to note is that Kapu is not just here to compete with Jumia. Even though it is run by former Jumia executives, it appears to do what Twiga Foods does not just Jumia.

You can buy fresh produce and other essentials through its platform. No option to buy consumer electronics or some of the other segments Jumia is well known for.

    Affordable products

With the launch of Kapu, the company reitareated that they want to help ” reduce the cost of living” for its customers. This can be achieved by sourcing products directly from the farms and manufacturers, having a low-cost logistics network and minimal food waste.

Customers can also get even cheaper prices by placing orders as a group. This might actually be a good plan if you think about it.

Kapu also revealed that the range is larger than the kiosk, including quality fresh produce from Kenyan farms, and at wholesale prices.

Kapu CEO Sam Chappatte said, “We think it’s unfair that consumers in Kenya spend 40% of their income on food, when Americans spend 6%. This is a huge blocker to social mobility. Our goal at Kapu is to build the most relevant model of e-commerce for the majority of urban consumers in Africa. By working with existing community groups & local entrepreneurs, we believe we can play a part in reducing the costs of goods, and unlocking opportunities for millions of people”.

    Started operations in early 2021

Kapu has officially launched today but the company has been operational in Kenya earlier this year. The company seems confident that its product is viable and the launch is meant to let the general public know of their existence.

    Relies on independent agents

When dealing with perishable farm produce, the challenge is always getting the products to consumers while they are still fresh. This is why Kapu is working with a network of independent agents across the country.

The company says it currently has over 1500. “Goods are then delivered for free the next day, to a Kapu Agent collection centre near their homes,” said Kapu in a statement.

Kapu agents include mama mbogas, salons, and individuals such as stay-at-home-mums and students, who are able to earn an extra income.

    Where to find Kapu Agents

At the moment, you can find Kapu Agents in:

    • Eastlands (Nairobi)
    • Kasarani
    • Kawangware
    • South B
    • Kibra
    • Embakasi
    • Githurai
    • Kiambu

More locations to be added by March 2023.

How to order products through Kapu

    • Dial  *789*8# to register
    • When  registered, place an order with a Kapu Agent near you.

You will also be able to order via WhatsApp or through their website.

All orders placed before 9pm will be delivered the next day for free.
