Apple officially launched AirTag, an accessory for tracking items and a rival to Samsung’s Bluetooth-powered SmartTag and SmartTag+. AirTag works with Apple’s Find My ecosystem adding more functionality to it, helping users track lost items more easily. It depends on the company’s extensive Find My network to track down items.

Going for $29, AirTag is a small, round, lightweight device engraved in a stainless steel exterior. It’s IP67 certified for both water and dust resistance. The former means that the device can stay inside water up to a meter deep for half an hour without damages.

There’s a built-in speaker for playing sounds to help in locating a lost item in proximity. Setting up AirTag is easy as setting up new AirPods: bring AirTag close to iPhone, and it will connect. You can also name each AirTag appropriately to easily identify items if you have more than one and track more than one thing.

If a lost item is near, users can find it easily by using the Find My app to play a sound from the AirTag. Additionally, Siri can also help find a lost item with AirTag attached to it. And using the Find My app, a user can see the current or the last known location of an item.

According to Apple, iPhone 11 and 12 users should get more precision using AirTag, thanks to Precision Finding, which provides the distance plus direction of a lost AirTag in close range.

And if an item is not in range, users can place it into Lost Mode and be notified when it is found by Find My network. Additionally, “if a lost AirTag is found by someone, they can tap it using their iPhone or any NFC-capable device and be taken to a website that will display a contact phone number for the owner, if they have provided one.”

Apple announced a slew of accessories that work with AirTag that users can purchase separately.

There’s also a selection of “handcrafted leather accessories” like travel and luggage bags with “a custom-engraved AirTag.”
