Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass, has announced a new iteration to its tough glass. The new Corning Gorilla Glass is simply known as Victus, changing the company’s naming convention which has long been using numbers – Gorilla Glass 3, 5 etc.

Victus is touted to have significant improvement in both drop and scratch performance. For instance, Corning says Victus survived drops onto “hard, rough surfaces” from up to 2 meters, making it twice as tough as Gorilla Glass 6. Check out Corning’s Product Sheet for the nitty-gritty.

The huge leap in performance, according to Corning senior VP John Bayne, is to make phones suitable for the increasingly long upgrade cycles by consumers. Yes, people are keeping their phones longer than they used to, evidently shown in performance reports of smartphone makers.

Given the ubiquitous nature of Gorilla Glass on modern-day smartphones, expect to see tougher resistance on near-future devices. Devices with not only better resistance to drops and scratches but that can also retain usability after being damaged.

In case you’re wondering why news about Victus matters, here’s the why. Many smartphone companies use Gorilla Glass to protect their phone’s displays; from Apple to Samsung, to Xiaomi and others. The company’s sales counter reveals that Gorilla Glass has been used in more than 8 billion devices by more than 45 major brands.

Remember Gorilla Glass is also used in laptops, and even wearables like smart watches away from just handhelds.
