Sony PlayStation 4 Sales Surpass The 110 Million Mark

Years after its launch, Sony’s PlayStation 4 console has slowly climbed the ladder to become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. Recently, The PlayStation4 has smashed yet another record.

According to the company’s recently released Q1 financial report, it sold 1.5 million consoles in the Jan-March period. That bumps up the total number of PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles sold to date to slightly over 110 million. Previously, Sony revealed selling a total of 108.9 million units according to its Q4 2019 financial report released in February this year.

The PlayStation4 is old enough, though, and, as a result, sales have been slowing down. In the same period last year, the company sold 2.6 million consoles. Throughout the previous financial year, only 13.6 million PS4 units were sold, down from 17.8 million the previous year. Units of software sold also decreased for the FY2019/20 compared to the financial year prior.

For now, that shouldn’t bother Sony as much as they are already geared up to refresh the PlayStation series with another next-gen console later this year. PlayStation 5 will replace the PlayStation 4, which was first released in 2013.

As people try to save for the new hardware, PS4’s run for the top position continues to weaken. Still PS4 is ranked as the second-best selling console behind the PlayStation 2, which sold around 155 million units. It’s unlikely that the PS4 will ever make it past this mark.

The company will still introduce the PS5 as planned, although there have been worries in the video game industry that some next-gen games will be pushed back due to covid-19.
