Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s CEO, has announced a significant change on the platform regarding political advertising. Jack says, “all political advertising on Twitter globally” will be stopped because they believe “political message reach should be earned, not bought.”

In a round-up of follow up tweets, he explains that they believe political message outreach could grow even without advertising.

“… we have witnessed many social movements reach massive scale without any political advertising.”

“I trust this will only grow,” he added.

Dorsey says the power of internet advertising is massive and very powerful. As a result, this “power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.”

He also acknowledged the threat posed by political advertising, an entirely new challenge to the civic discourse like “machine learning-based optimization of messaging and micro-targeting, unchecked misleading information, and deep fakes.”

Considering how Ads are highly optimized and targeted, it removes the element of choice which he describes as “forcing.”

Twitter’s CEO says the company is ready to handle the root of problems, while at the same time, avoiding an additional burden of making money as a company.

Twitter will release a new ad policy on November 15th, which will be valid as of November 22nd.
