Yesterday at the Huawei Mate 30 series launch, it was clear that the new Mate flagship devices won’t ship with Google services. This can be traced back to the ban imposed on the company by the US over the possible use of their telco equipment by the Chinese government for espionage.
However, later on, it became clear that besides that, the US government also banned Huawei to get a chance to resume stalled trade talks between the two countries.
So, just as Google had tipped before, Huawei Mate 30 series does not ship with Google Services. However, is Huawei worried about that anyway?
After the end of the Mate 30 series launch event, Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu, in an interview, stated that the new devices would first be available in Asia. He explained that the Asian and the Middle East markets would be prioritized as they believe even with the lack of Google services, these markets won’t have any issues with the devices considering that the devices are “so great”, he stated.
For carriers, Yu believes they will still sell the device. “We have no other choice… we were forced to do this… companies, partners, carriers also understand us,” he stated.
Because the on-going ban bars Huawei from pre-installing Google services Huawei’s CEO stated this is not a limitation. Since “There are also a lot of third-party apps and places where you can download any app,” he stated. That is to say, you can still sideload Google Services if you want.
An alternative to Google’s Playstore, Huawei Mate 30 series comes pre-installed with its App Gallery where users can download apps from. Plus, there is also Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) Core suite. Huawei boasted over more than 45,000 apps having already been integrated with HMS Core capabilities, and the store currently has more than 390 million monthly active users (MAUs).
Although the MAUs stats may seem huge, that number cannot be anywhere near what Google’s Playstore registers. Huawei Mate 30 Series will come pre-installed with several apps from the company, including a messaging app, gallery, calls, calendar, a web browser plus other essential apps that are needed on a smartphone.
But it does not end there, Huawei has also set aside $1 billion to fund the development of its AppGallery. The fund is aimed at enticing developers to jump on Huawei’s newly born lonely ecosystem. Developers will be provided with the necessary tools to kickstart their development of essential apps on the platform.
