LG May Release Its First Smartphone with Foldable Display as Early as Next Year

For smartphone manufacturers, being innovative and ahead of competition is always a plus. If you want to win the customers, you must innovate every so often as this is one of the ways to differentiate yourself from other players on the market.

LG is one company that understands this but the company’s poor marketing strategies have slowed it down when it comes to actual sales. Besides its unimpressive marketing tactics, LG has always been innovative with its devices. The current innovation that the company is working on has to do with foldable displays that it may include in some of its smartphones to be released as early as next year.

LG already has smartphones with flexible displays that it calls the LG G Flex series. These smartphones do not have foldable displays but rather slightly curved ones that give the phone an arc-like appearance.

With the G Flex series already on the market, LG is believed to be working on a new series of smartphones with true foldable displays. This is according to sources who spoke to ETNews who said that the company has moved its foldable displays projects from research labs to the development phase. This marks a big step towards mass production. The same sources say that the displays are licensed using technology from Canadian company IGNIS Innovation, the displays can be folded to be concave or convex.

The CEO of IGNIS has already confirmed that smartphones with foldable displays are coming. He is quoted saying, “People are going to witness foldable smartphones that can become tablets when they are spread open within couple years.”

It is not clear if the CEO of IGNIS is talking about LG only or if there are other manufacturers working on such devices.
