Xiaomi is undoubtedly one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers out there. last year, the company sold over 70.8 million smartphones and it controls about 5% of the global smartphone market share. This is impressive considering that it has been around for about 6 years. Xiaomi is known for its slightly affordable devices that come with premium specs and this is what has helped it grow so fast.

Xiaomi has two main smartphone lineups, the Mi series and the Redmi series. The Mi series is made of its premium devices that costs a fraction of what premium devices from other manufactures cost and the Redmi series which is made up of its affordable devices.

Xiaomi launched the Redmi series back in 2013 (August) and since then, it has sold over 110 million Redmi units. This was revealed on Twitter by the Global Vice President of the company Hugo Barra. He tweeted, “Xiaomi has sold 110 million Redmi phones globally since our first Redmi phone launched in Aug 2013. That’s 1.21 units per second in 3 years!”

110 million units of a single smartphone series is huge considering that Xiaomi phones are not available in all markets at the moment. The company officially sells its devices in Asia, a few countries in Africa, some European and American countries. The success of the Redmi series has to do with price, these devices tend to be affordable and offer consumers more value compared to other brands. This is especially so for the emerging markets that the company is targeting consumers want the best but are not willing to go with the more expensive and established brands.

Hugo Barra went ahead to reveal that majority of the Redmi users are between 22 and 29 years old. The devices appeal to young people so this makes perfect sense. For a company that was not around 7 years ago, you have to give it up for Xiaomi for carving out a niche for itself.
