Lenovo’s Tech World conference took place yesterday and took the opportunity to introduce the new Phab2 Pro smartphone that has been in production for a while. The Lenovo Phab2 Pro smartphone stands out as being the first Project Tango phone. If you don’t know, Project Tango (or just Tango) is Google’s camera system that is able to detect physical objects in 3D.
Launching this smartphone may be part of Lenovo’s plan to break into the American market. The company has had a tough time breaking into the US mobile market and hopefully this new smartphone may help things out a bit. This was not the only smartphone that the company showcased, the company also unveiled the Phab 2 and Phab 2 Plus.
All the Phab 2 variants come with 6.4 inch displays which are quite massive. These are phablets and that is where they get their names from. The Phab 2 has an IPS display with a resolution of 720p. It will be powered by a quad-core MediaTek 8735 processor coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage space. This can be expanded further using a microSD card. The camera at the back is a 13MP unit.
The Lenovo Phab 2 Plus on the other hand has an IPS display with a 1080p resolution. It is powered by a quad-core MediaTek 8783 paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage space. Just like the Phab 2, the Plus variant has a microSD card slot for you to expand your memory. The interesting bit about the Phab 2 Plus is that it comes with a dual camera setup which is perfect for refocusing after taking images. It comes with a laser autofocus sensor. The phone also comes with a fingerprint sensor.
The Phab 2 Pro on the other hand comes with a 6.4-inch QHD IPS. It is powered by a Snapdragon 652 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage space. As for the camera, it comes with 4 of those. The front facing camera is an 8MP one with a 16MP main one at the back in addition to a depth camera and a motion tracking camera. These are what help detect physical objects in 3D.
The price of the Phab 2, Phab 2 Plus and the Phab 2 Pro are $199 (approximately Ksh 20,000), $299 (approximately Ksh 30,000) and $499 (approximately Ksh 50,000) respectively. The company says these phone will be available later in the year.
