For the past few months, there have been rumours and speculations as to who would replace Steve Ballmer as Microsoft’s CEO. Mr. Ballmer had announced late last year that he was going to retire as the company’s CEO, a position he has held since 2000.

At last, we can go ahead and bury all those rumours and speculations as the company has officially named Satya Nadella as its new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Nadella has been with Microsoft for the past 22 years and served as the company’s executive vice president of cloud and enterprise before this appointment.

In his statement to Microsoft employees, Nadella said, “The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must focus clearly, move faster and continue to transform.  A big part of my job is to accelerate our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly.”

The outgoing CEO, Steve Ballmer, took this opportunity to praise the technical skills of Nadella and to thank Microsoft employees for the support they had shown him over the years.

In the meantime, Bill Gates will step down as the Chairman of the board of directors and take up a new position as Founder and Technology advisor. This will mean, he spends more time at Microsoft and work closely with Nadella.
