Facebook has of late been borrowing heavily from one of its biggest competitors, Twitter. The company recently added hash tags to the site to allow users take part in certain discussions easily. Hash tags are what set twitter apart from the rest right from the start.

Now, Facebook has introduced trending topics (popular on Twitter)  that will be displayed on the upper right corner of one’s account. Facebook has been testing this new feature for sometime now and has just rolled it to a few select countries. This new feature will only be available for desktop users as testing is still in progress for its use on mobile devices.

Facebook claims that the main idea behind Trending is to allow users to know what happens around the social site as a whole rather than concentrate on topics and conversations shared by their friends.

The trending topics will be highlighted on the top right corner and includes only a handful of topics personalized for each user. The topics chosen may be Facebook-as-a-whole trends or topics you may be interested in depending on your past Facebook activity, likes, and other applicable settings. Each trending topic will have a small blurb explaining what the topic is all about and clicking it will pull up other posts related to the topic.

Facebook is still rolling out this new feature so you may have to wait a little longer to get it for those who do not have it.
