Kenya Sees a Significant Growth in Internet Subscriptions

Ever since the undersea internet cable landed in Kenya, the number of internet users in the country has been on the increase. With this increase, internet service providers have also increased speeds over their networks across the country. With the increase in internet speeds, it is no surprise that the total number of internet users in the country keeps increasing.

According to the current statistics from the Communication Commission of Kenya, the total number of internet users in the country surged to 16.2 million for a period of three months ranging from October 1 to December 31 2012. This represents a growth of 11.6% in the total internet users in the country.

The report also added that Mobile data controlled a bigger share of the Internet market representing 99% of the total internet subscriptions in the country; this shows that 99% of Kenyans access the internet through their mobile devices.

Internet penetration in the country also went up to 41.1% from 36.8% representing a growth of 4.3%. This growth will definitely be maintained if the internet costs drop and the speeds go up.

Comparing the pre-paid and post-paid subscribers, the Pre-paid internet subscribers dominated this sector contributing a 99% of the total internet subscriptions.
