Opera News Crosses the 5 Million Downloads Mark and Is Giving Users in Kenya Free Data in partnership with Safaricom

Opera News

If you live in Kenya, you have probably heard about Opera Mini, it is one of the most popular mobile browsers in the country. This browser gained popularity as it came pre-installed in most Android smartphones back in the day and because it compresses web pages and thus use less data.

In addition to the browser, there is Opera News, a news app that the company launched earlier this year. You may have seen the app on the Play Store as I have seen some of its ads recently. Opera news seems to be doing well as it has just crossed the five million downloads mark in the African market. This happened during the first quarter of 2018 and is quite impressive if you ask me. This makes Opera News the top news app in Africa and the fastest growing Opera product this year.

It is impressive to see Opera News grow this fast but it is not hard to see why. The app aggregates news from different sources and this makes it the go to app for those who may want to stay in the know with what is happening around them but do not want to keep moving from one website to another. We do not see that many applications reach the five million mark this fast as it is not easy as you may imagine.

Commenting on this, Jørgen Arnesen, Global Head of Marketing and Distribution at Opera said, “Opera News is now the number one news and video app in Africa, topping the download charts in all the key markets.  Over the coming year, the way people consume news and videos will change completely. We are proud to lead this transformation with Opera News.”

Free Data in Partnership with Safaricom

To celebrate this milestone, Opera has partnered with Safaricom to reward Opera News users in Kenya with free data. All you have to do to get the free data is invite your friends to download the app.

You will get 35MB every time you invite a friend to download the app but before this, you will get 15MB for just downloading Opera News. If the friend you invite convinces another friend to download the app, you get an extra 5MB of free data. Sounds impressive, then start by downloading the app from the Play Store.

The more friends you end up inviting, the more free data you get. The data is available for Safaricom users only and will be added to your data balance and you will be able to use it to do whatever you want on your favorite applications.

“The reward system in Opera News is easy. The more friends and family that download Opera News from your invitation, the more data you will earn,” said Arnesen. “We are excited to partner up with Safaricom, as they are one of the biggest and most disruptive companies in Africa.”

You will be able to invite friends directly from the home section of Opera News when you see the ‘Invite Friends’ section. You can also go to the ‘Me’ section of the app that you will find on the bottom right corner of the app. When you tap on the ‘Invite friends’ tab, you will see the different options you can use to invite your friends to download the app. These include WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter just to mention a few. A unique link will be generated by the app and this is the link that will be sent to your contacts. If this sounds like something you will be interested in, make sure to get the app from the play store right now.
