Sony Has No Plans of Exiting the Smartphone Market After all

Last week, Sony’s CEO was quoted by some websites saying that the company would withdraw from the mobile business if it is not profitable in the next 12 months. This news did not necessarily come as a surprise as Sony has had it rough for a while with its smartphone business and for most people the only logical thing to do is to fold its mobile business.

If you are an Xperia fan, you do not have to worry anymore as Sony has no plans of withdrawing from the smartphone market. Of course it would not make any sense for Sony to leave the market at this point as its sales have just started picking up recently and with its Xperia Z5, devices, things are looking good.

Speaking to reporters, Sony’s spokesman said, “The Company has no plans to withdraw from the mobile business.” Of course this may just be a PR move as the company knows that if it confirms it is existing the smartphone market, sales of its new devices will be affected so much. But then again, the company might just be serious that it is not exiting the market anytime soon. If you ask me, the latter is true.

Sony even went ahead to send out a press release that further confirmed that the company is not leaving the smartphone market. The statement said that “Consideration of profitability and market conditions for the control of risk is very important.” The statement went ahead to say that its mobile unit is high risk one but it hopes for a turnaround by the end of the current financial year (FY15).

We will keep an eye on this for you in case of any changes or news from Sony. My hope at the moment is for Sony to turn a profit as it is one company that makes some of the best smartphones currently on the market.
