Facebook is undoubtedly the most popular social networking site out there. In Kenya, Facebook is very popular and is in most cases the first social networking site people sign up to when they are introduced to social networking. Up until today, we did not have concrete data of Facebook usage in Kenya and all was left to speculation.

Today, Facebook has released user statistics for Kenya and Nigeria. Through the stats, Facebook has revealed that 2.2 Million Kenyans use its website on a daily basis. On the other hand, 4.5 Million Kenyans use the site every month. These figures just show you how big and popular Facebook is in the country at the moment.

In Nigeria, Facebook has revealed that over 7.1 Million people use the site on a daily basis while 15 Million people use it every month.

Mobile First

Facebook also revealed that most of these people come through the site via mobile devices. 100% of Nigerian monthly users are active on mobile as are 95% of Kenya’s monthly users. This is not a surprise as most people in Africa access the internet via mobile devices.

Growth in Africa

The latest stats come after the recent announcements that the active population of Facebook users in Africa has grown by 20% from 100 Million in September 2014 to 120 Million in June 2015. Out of all the 120 Million users, 80% of them access the site via mobile devices. With these numbers, you can conclude that 60% of all Internet users in Africa are active on Facebook.

Head of Africa at Facebook, Nunu Ntshingila said, “Mobile is not a trend; it’s the fastest adoption of disruptive technology in history of communication. It’s also an incredibly personal device regardless of where a person lives or how they connect, and businesses need to reach people where they are, not where they were, in an authentic, personal and relevant way. I look forward to spending time with businesses across Africa to understand how we can work together.”

Facebook is really growing and these recent stats are very appealing to marketers who are looking for new markets to target. Will Facebook continue growing? Yes, contrary to what people think, Facebook will continue growing especially in Africa.
