With the expansion of 4G services in Kenya, we expect smartphone manufacturers to introduce their new devices that support 4G LTE. The latest manufacturer to enter the 4G club is Wiko which has introduced its first 4G smartphone in Kenya. The smartphone, called Ridge 4G is available in Safaricom shops for Ksh 19,999.

Wiko has decided to partner with Safaricom with the hope of seeing better sales results. Am not sure if this is a good strategy as I think the company was better off partnering with Jumia as it can offer better visibility and more sales within a short time.

Speaking to the Business Daily when launching the Ridge 4G, Wiko country manager John Mutwiri said, “Our core market targets the youth and the middle-aged who are conversant with the latest mobile phone technology.”

Wiko Ridge 4G specs

Back to the Wiko Ridge 4G, it has a 5 inch HD screen with a resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels which translates to a pixel density of 295 PPI. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 processor (Quad Core) which is coupled with 1GB of RAM. For the memory, the phone has an 8GB capacity that can be expanded up to 64 GB using a microSD card.

The Wiko Ridge 4G is one of the lightest smartphones out there weighing 125g only. One thing I do not like about this phone is that it comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat. At least Wiko should have tried to upgrade it to Lollipop before bringing it to the market. The phone has a 13MP main camera at the back and a 5MP front facing camera.

The Wiko Ridge 4G smartphone comes with a 2400 mAh non removable battery that is not bad given its 5 inch size. The phone is available in Black Grey, Black Bleen, Black Clementine and Arctic Gold.

Is It Worth It?

Besides the 4G support feature, should you get the Wiko Ridge 4G? My answer is probably not, the phone has a beautiful design but that is just about it. You can get other phones on Jumia at cheaper prices. Ksh 19,999 IS just a little much for me if you are just looking for a phone that supports 4G. If you are not interested in 4G devices, you can even get cheaper devices with better specs that this. But if you want the beautiful design and 4G support, go to any Safaricom shop and get this phone.
