Vaio’s first Smartphone is “simple and stylish” but question is, will outdo competition?

Vaio Phone 970 80

Vaio split from Sony and now stands as its own company free to make its own devices. The company’s first device after the split is surprisingly a Smartphone, I did not expect this I have to admit. Either way, it is a nice surprise.

The Smartphone referred to as the Vaio Phone has a 5-inch display with a 720p resolution. Under the frame sits a 1.2GHz processor with 2GB of RAM. These are not mind blowing specs but I will not complain too much. Storage space is decent at 16GB with a microSD card slot available to further expand it up to 64GB.

Powering this Smartphone is a 2,500mAh battery. The Smartphone will be available as from March 20 in Japan. It will come with Android 5.0 Lollipop preinstalled with Vaio’s own skin on top. The back camera is a 13MP one but we still have no news of a front facing camera.

Vaio refers to this Smartphone as “simple and stylish” so it looks more like a mid range Smartphone. What got me thinking is, will it survive the crowded Smartphone market? The answer at this point may be no, the Smartphone does not offer anything exciting that will make it appealing to most consumers.

Of course the Smartphone will attract new customers but not that many. If I were to be asked, I would suggest the company to focus on premium device with premium specs if it is to take the market by storm. Its design is pretty basic with normal features we can find in any Smartphone on the market.

Let me not be too negative and wait for the device to launch officially before i give my final verdict,

It retail price will be around $420 (Ksh 39,000 pre tax).
