How Technology Affects Relationships

Family Traditions Keeping Technology Off the Dinner Table Honey and Nonno

The Internet is a very popular tool used by almost everyone no matter where they are in the world or what they do. The Internet is used for many different things and has a number of advantages and drawbacks.  Some of its used include Research,Location and address info, social media such as Facebook,Twitter among others.Technology is fast changing and dynamic and so are its users.Despite the fact that it has connected and brought individuals together, most break ups and divorces can be linked and blamed on social media.Cases of fraud and online theft are also on the increase as hackers are getting smarter and by passing tough security precautions, installed by banks and Companies.

Email, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Delicious, Digg, LinkedIn, blogs (of course), and scores of others—all part of the new and wonderful ways we can now connect with one another electronically, each with its own culture and unique set of rules. In one sense, the planet has never been more interconnected. And yet, this interconnectedness, while wonderful, hasn’t come without cost.Technology has been linked to two classifications or group of people to whom it affects both Positively and negatively; They Include

Family Time

Most families despite being able to easily connect offline are using  whatsapp groups and Facebook. In family where, for example.  the father  is always tweeting or checking emails for business deals, there is very little connection between the members. The dad doesn’t also for example get to hang out with his kid or check out his homework.

Other instances feature a family in which father and mother are on the phone and their computers and the kids busy on their smart phones and Video games. This shows lack of a family unity and togetherness in that most problems that would arise and would be easily solved by the family heads go unsolved and evolve into irreversible problems.

Marriages and Relationships

Statistics have shown that over 60%of all divorces today are due to social media,as people reconnect and meet on these social media platforms. Over 50% of all breaks ups and splits  have also been linked to text messages and social chat rooms such as whatsapp ,Facebook and Twitter.A good example is a teenage boy who dumps his girlfriend of two years for a stranger he just met on Facebook,or a Family man abandons his family and quits a 20 year marriage just for some side chick he met on Facebook.

Technology has been evolving for hundreds of years. Digital technology is universal and there is no way to avoid it, but people need to start using it more responsibly.  Although there are some positive aspects, the negative aspects outweigh them substantially. Technology use affects the social realm by creating barriers between loved ones, producing distractions, and instigating disrespectful behavior.

During this age of information, relationships are continuously strained. When cell phones are present, it’s as if two people standing next to each other to be on totally different planets. Loved ones ignore face to face contact and start to rely on technology to keep the relationship alive. Prior to the technological age, couples were able to successfully communicate in person. Nowadays people depend on technology so much it even alters their personality. Avid technology users feel at home when behind their laptops that it becomes uncomfortable to converse with others in a real life settings. It is as if you are talking to a completely different person when switching from a technological conversation to face to face.
