Android undoubtedly controls a huge percentage of Smartphones in the world. The Open source Mobile operating system has been in the lead in this space for a long time and it’s still growing. This is according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) report that showed Android’s marketshare rise significantly during the second quarter of 2014 compared to other operating systems.

During the second quarter of 2014, 301 Million Smartphones were shipped and Android accounted for 84.7% of these devices. This means that over 255 Million Android Smartphones were shipped during this period. This was a new high for Android as it represents a growth of 33% from the same period last year.

Apple’s iOS came a distant second as its market share grew by 12.7% during this period. Overall, 35.2 Million iOS devices were shipped globally during the second quarter of 2014. Even though these figures are impressive, Apple’s market share declined from the same period last year from 13% to 11.7%.

At a distant third is Windows Phone that currently has 2.5% market share. BlackBerry follows this with 0.5% marketshare.
