Samsung confirms that it’s working on a smart watch- Galaxy Altius

If you thought that the rivalry between Samsung, Google, Apple and Sony is coming to end, think again. This is because there seems to be another battlefield now- the Smart Wrist watch market. After Samsung unleashed the latest technology beast, the Samsung Galaxy S4  they have now confirmed that they are now ready and set to venture deeper into the smart watch market, just a few days after Apple was said to be working on one too. This means that even if the two devices don’t launch at the same time, they will both be very competitive with each other. It also means that we should expect Superb features especially after the much-hyped Samsung Galaxy S4 was described as super but a bit overrated- maybe owing to the fact that most of the features had been rumored about before.

Samsung Mobile VP Lee Young Hee confirmed reports that the company is developing a connected wristwatch. He said that they had been preparing the watch product for so long and that the company has been working hard to bring it to market. This ends the rumors that many people had and marks the first official confirmation from a Samsung executive although the details were not provided and its name is still expected to be the Galaxy ALtius.

Samsung is not new in the wearable electronics having already tried their luck there in vain, starting 1999 with the SPH-WP10 which was followed by S9110 in 2009 which was a bit more advanced with a touchscreen version with Bluetooth support and Outlook email syncing, this device retailed for around $470 at the time. The two didn’t perform that well and now Samsung is sure that with the Smartphone’s level of saturation being experienced at the moment, then it might be the time for the smart watches now. The global watch industry is expected to generate more than $60 billion in sales this year, and Samsung just like Apple, Sony and Google are all hoping to be among the first companies to sell devices that multitask which is expected that this could lock customers into their platform, boosting sales of phones, tablets and TVs.

The VP didn’t provide any other details on the product, but a Reuters report citing an unnamed source claims that the watch will perform many of the functions of a smartphone. Something they are not likely to ignore is the Android platform where they have been performing so perfectly with maybe Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi connectivity.
