Twitter Adds Read Receipts to Allow You to See When Someone Reads Your DM

Twitter App

Twitter has been making changes to its platform recently to ensure people spend more time on the platform and connect with others. The latest change the company is implementing has to do with the Direct Messages (DMs) users send.

The company announced this yesterday saying that DMs will get read receipts that inform you when someone has seen and opened your message. This is sort of the same thing you get with other messaging platforms including WhatsApp, Telegram and even Facebook Messenger. This new feature turns Twitter into sort of a chat app but will definitely raise eyebrows from those who see it as a feature that is clearly not needed on the platform, sometimes you just want to ignore people without being so obvious.

Besides the read receipts, Twitter is also introducing typing indicators that show you when a person you are chatting with is typing. In addition to this, the company is also introducing web link previews that allow you to preview a link and know what it is about before you open it.

Good news, You can disable read receipts on Twitter

For those who are worried that read receipts puts them under pressure as people will see they have read their messages and are not replying, there is a way to disable them. You can disable them by going to the settings page and then click on “security and privacy”. Scroll down to the ‘Direct Messages’ tab and uncheck the ‘send/receive read receipts’. This feature is enabled by default so you will have to disable it yourself.
